Actually there is a way to use this method none destructive. you can select everything after you delete it with the eraser and on a new layer with the originial photograph just mask what you selected and make sure its white very simple

Many ways to do this. I have shot and produced a few books with cut out subjects on a white background. Some have said why are the tutorials showing a uniform background. Simple, if you have to cut out hair and produce series of images that is the best way. Personally I find your method inefficient and low precision. Mask and refine, multiply the produced layers until the semi opaque pixels come back and you are done.
